Which Porsche Crossover SUV is Right for You? Compare and Contrast the Current Lineup

Leading the way for luxury crossover SUVs, Porsche has an impressive lineup of crossover models and trim levels for you to choose from. Since the Cayenne model's explosive arrival on the scene, the Cayenne model has found a natural home within Porsche's sports, luxury vehicles. The Macan has more recently joined the Cayenne as a smaller sibling.

Both the Cayenne and Macan models come in a variety of trims so that drivers in the Phoenix can choose the best option for their lifestyles. Starting with the Cayenne, let's run through the available trim levels.

Tried and True Porsche Cayenne

After its controversial beginnings, the Cayenne has settled into the Porsche family as one a spacious but sporty option. The current Cayenne model perfectly balances a driving experience at the top of its class with advanced technology features to create the ideal luxury SUV experience. The Cayenne has three trim levels: the Cayenne, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo.

The base trim level Cayenne has anything but a basic performance. It is equipped with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that produces 335 horsepower and 333.1 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile the Cayenne S sports a newly designed 434 horsepower 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 405 pound-feet of torque.

The Cayenne model is also available in the Cayenne Turbo trim level, which has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that generates a whopping 541 horsepower and 567 pound-feet of torque. If you're looking for the most powerful driving performance that the Cayenne has to offer, this would be it.

All trim levels come with adaptive air suspension, which allows for both sporty and comfort by adjusting the spring rate to match the driving mode. The Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control system monitors lateral instability on uneven ground and takes measures to offset and suppress it, allowing you to feel safe and confident when cornering.

The Cayenne comes with a suite of driver assistance features that move it to the cut-edge of safety and convenience. The Cayenne model comes with a variety of impressive features which include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Keep Assist including traffic sign recognition
  • Collision Brake Assist
  • Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus
  • Head-Up Display
  • Night Vision Assist

The Porsche Macan Offers Lean Versatility

The sibling of the Cayenne provides a nimble driving experience while allowing for plenty of functionality. The Macan also comes in three trim levels: the Macan, Macan Sport Edition, and Macan S.

The Macan comes with Porsche Traction Management active all-wheel drive for increased control and traction. The system continuously checks such variables as the rotation speeds of the wheels, the longitudinal and lateral acceleration of the vehicle, and the steering angle. By monitoring and adjusting all these variables, you will have increased lateral stability when cornering and reduced wheel slip.

Both the Macan and Macan Sport Edition come with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 252 horsepower. However, with the Macan Sport Edition's exterior design, it is able to shave off a bit of time off the base model's zero to 60. Meanwhile, the Macan S has a 340 horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine for an even snappier driving experience.

The Macan also comes equipped with several safety features, but not quite as many that are available on the Cayenne. The Macan has the option of including Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus for safer cornering at night. You can expect Lane Departure Warning, a reversing camera, and ParkAssist.

To go over some of what is above, the Cayenne generally has more impressive speed and amount of safety features, but the Macan has a leg-up when it comes to having standard all-wheel drive and increased traction. Of course, the Cayenne also offers more cabin and cargo volume, but a large factor in deciding between the two is the price. The Macan has a lower starting price than the Cayenne.

A lot of what it comes down to is picking the features that are most important to you. If it's roominess and a powerful engine, then maybe a Cayenne model is right for you. If it's all-wheel drive and price, then maybe the Macan. Whichever you choose, you will find yourself having an unforgettable driving experience.
